Silent Sidewalks

Unlike in the city, the sidewalks here are clean and lack messages. The only thing to watch out for are the Canadian Geese droppings. There is no trash and no messaging. Only the sounds of silence.

From the mill to the sidewalk (part three)

Dylan is an expert on pigeons. He is ten years old, and often wears a vintage Russian Cossack Red Army hat. He studied pigeons for school projects. Here is his self-protrait with some pigeons like those eating the corn meal on the sidewalk from the mill we visited...

From the mill to the sidewalk (part two)

Someone threw away two bags of corn meal from that mill in my neighborhood a couple days ago. One bag got dragged away by an animal; it broke open on the sidewalk. We saw some pigeons enjoying it yesterday. Today all that was left was this residue.

This water wheel still operates at an old mill near Calistoga. J. and I hiked a mile or so through the woods to visit it one day in July 2005. The mill sells flour in small one-pound bags.

Katz's Deli

The best (and biggest) hot pastrami on rye sandwich I've eaten in years was here on the Sunday I took this photo. My girlfriend said it reminded her of a deli that her Dad used to take her to on Sundays in L.A. On this occasion, in November 2004, we had lunch at Katz's. Our waiter, a little man, admired her military-style hiking pants, which she'd bought the day before on 8th. He said he wanted to buy a pair like that for his sister. Both of them are in the background in this shot. What I like best about this is how the neon lights reflect the noisy chaos of the place...

Orchard Street

This is a shot from the lower east side in November 2004. We went on the tenement museum tour here. Anyone interested in Jewish or immigrant history in the U.S. should go here. My girlfriend, who always refuses to have her face photographed, is in this shot, looking away, in her pink fake fur coat and copper-colored dyed hair. There is also a great bookstore here connected with the museum tours.

As seen on TV...

Midtown

The story is we were visiting for a few days in early November 2005 just before she drove across the country from San Francisco to Biloxi. We were walking, and stopped holding hands just long enough for me to snap this one.
